Return to Girlhood- Oceanic by Aimee Nezhukumatahil

Oceanic response

Upon opening the pages of Oceanic- by Aimee Nezhukumatahil- I was immediately transported into an ethereal space of calming blues and whimsical daydreams. Aimee so delicately narrates stories prompted from the most tender, unexpected details, allowing the reader to truly appreciate the sweetness of the ecology that we exist in that is generally overlooked.

'When you Select the Daughter Card'
The daughter reminds you to look for moon-glow on every leaf and sea grape.
Such wonderment and safety in store for you

Throughout these pages, I felt a deepening sense of belongingness in the little world I live in. It is so so big, but so so small and tender- we are little observers.

'The Origin of Feather's on my Windshield'
I am like a man who prefers the taste of his own tongue instead of the lips of summer. My shadow and the shadow of sunflowers are the same.

This book made me feel small- but not because my worth was diminished. Small like the way a child is small. Small in the way that makes the world sublimely big- and full of adventures and lovely love thoughts.

'In the Museum of Glass Flowers'
You once said hummingbirds called my name. But I think the thrum was something else. Something wild and hairy.

I was reminded of my intent to return to the practice of playing- something I forget to do in my every day doings-in the spaces between work and school.

'From The Rambutan Notebooks'
If a girl is retrieved from clouds, then what
Is her throat now, what is her wrist and ear?
Where with she call home now?

Return to girlhood- the magic in discovery, expression- the colors that timbre our atmospheres. There is deep involvement and intersection between our mundane human existences and the existences of all the the plants and animals that share my world, that I feel I was much more aware of as a child.

If you still want to look up, I hope you see the dark sky as oceanic, boundless, limitless- like all the shades of blue revealed in a Glacier. Lets listen how this planet hums with so much wing, fur and fun

I am left with a lasting inspiration to write love stories about every detail of the universe that I get carried away with. To get carried away in my own love stories.

    Mamieyanu,

I also felt a sweet feeling of "belongingness" while reading this book. This book sings almost. It does a great job at lulling us into her world of wonder and joy, and think Aimee elicits us to rethink how those experiences are precious for poets of color.
